Common core is not “hard” it’s overly complicated nonsense that is a waste of everyone’s time. Your child is not struggling because they are dumb. They are struggling because some businessman who has never worked a day in his life as a teacher wants to dictate what the standards should be because he makes MONEY from doing that. Bill and Melinda need to stay OUT of our education system. I believe this entire thing was just a con to make money. No one has been punished or exposed for this.

"Changing your math standards, it's not like some new form of math is being invented" YES, IT IS! It is a completely new way of doing math. The ideology of this makes sense, but I have one child in NYS public school and one in a private school, and the one forced to conform with Common Core Standards has an extremely difficult time with math, and I have difficulty helping with her homework. I work during the day and assist with homework every evening. I spend hours researching my daughter's sixth grade CCS math because she is not allowed to make logical calculations, but must draw out every step. She has also been introduced to a calculator this year, and is becoming dependent on it while still being required to draw the many circles and squares to show the various steps involved in the math formulas. The standards were enacted in our state when my daughter was in third grade. It has been a nightmare, and my daughter is the one being negatively impacted by this. I keep my criticisms to a minimum as not to encourage my daughter to feel validated in giving up, but her math is always very difficult to understand despite receiving extra help outside of her math class. It has caused her to say things like "I'm stupid" and "I am horrible at math, " completely dragging her confidence down.

The implementation of Common Core correlates exactly with the beginning of a long decline in American students test scores in every demographic. In this instance I'm inclined to believe that this correlation is an indication of causation.

I've seen common core in action. What should take a child one minute to finish a simple equation now takes ten minutes while they use an entire sheet of paper to draw a crap load of boxes instead of just stacking the numbers. Common core is not about specific math equations it's about holding the States who accept government funding to higher standards. Sad thing is, we already expect higher standards in our public educational system. We didn't need common core to get there. What we needed was to get rid of the lemon teachers. Our students do as good as the teachers teach. We don't have an education problem, we have a teacher problem. Hold the teachers to higher standards, pay them more, give them good benefits and get rid of the do-nothing "Here's another movie to watch today in class" teachers. 

That is the answer. NOT this common core bullshit.

Bill is incorrect. Common core is not just a set of standards. For math, which I tutor, it has convoluted some of the material, so as to make understanding a more daunting task. If common core was any good, it would have simplified manipulations and made learning easier. Common core does just the opposite, over complicating questions or really stupid questions. I for one think almost anyone can learn math. My favorite time tutoring is when I show a student a SIMPLE manipulation and they say "oh that's it". Yep it's that simple, but you need to practice. But when it comes to common core my advice is, don't try this on your own!

The man is right. He's spent more on education than all these folks offering critical comments below. At least do your kid a favor and take a look at what your kid is being taught compared to the other foreigners you keep complaining about taking your jobs and taking top spots in your universities.
