I had the privilege of studying with Constance Keene in New York City back in the early 2000's when I was working on my doctoral degree at Manhattan School of Music. Ms. Keene was married to Abram Chasins (1903-87) a noted pianist, author, composer, teacher and radio personality whose training held links to the great, Anton Rubinstein, Theodor Leschetizky and Franz Liszt!🤩

I am quite fond of Abram's writings and want to share an excerpt here with you in this shorts video. It has to do with listening, specifically opening one's ears.👂🏻Of course, this is essential when playing the music of Bach!😀

The passage quoted here is from the March 3, 1934 broadcast of Piano Pointers, a radio show hosted by Abram. He sure had a way with words, how I wish I could have known him. Fortunately, Ms. Keene and I had a very deep and meaningful teacher/student relationship and so I like to think that Abram and I would have gotten along splendidly.❤️

The Beethoven sonata is in no way programmatic. Beethoven did not give it a title.
