People may rip on this movie for Thumbelina letting things happen to her. But she has limited experience outside of home. She’s been away from her mother and Cornelius for months, relying on anyone to at least survive. This made her vulnerable to manipulation. This scene is her taking back agency. She learns the value of saying no and goes for what she’s wanted from the beginning. I love that this fairy tale in nearly all adaptations validates the woman saying no.

To this day, i still don't understand why the toad, the beetle and the mole are so obsessed w her. They're not even the same kind of animals as them.

I kinda assumed Cornelius (who is not obsessed w her btw) likes her bcs she's as pretty as him, so one would think these animals would be interested in creatures who are the same as them?? But idk it's just fantasy plot & i know animals are metaphors for ppl who force themselves on women even when being rejected.

Believe it or not, I used to watch this movie a lot when I was roughly around 3-5. By the time I attended my cousin’s wedding, I actually quoted that line at my cousin’s wedding aloud during the ceremony in a church filled with people and luckily, it made a lot of people laugh not in a mean and nasty bully kind of way but more like in a “that was so cute and amusing” kind of way. But what made this a bit more embarrassing was little did I knew that I was getting recorded on my cousin’s wedding video so the whole part of me yelling that line in the background was caught on camera just in the background. My parents didn’t tell me this until many years later. Looking back on it now as an adult, I actually laugh about it even though I’m still a little embarrassed by it to this day. Luckily my family and relatives thought it was very cute and had a pretty good sense of humour over so I guess I made my cousin’s wedding day a happier and fun one after all. True story.
