I put these comments somewhere else a psychiatrist point of view, John was actually a victim of maladaptive daydreaming, in which he fantasize himself as an adult and seeking the liberty to do everything on his own. Those who are victim of such a daydream fantasy, usually under confident (which it can be seen that he cannot answer confidently the square root of 225.) The other symptoms include a typical style of repeated kinetic motion during his daydream phase such as throwing the ball up to to the roof or playing tennis by himself, during that day dreaming phase he doesn't even know that what he was doing. Charlie Shotwell took the whole burden of the film by himself courageously.

It would be really sad, and a terrible waste, to lose Shotwell's talent during the quite difficult transition from child to adult actor… I wish his a smooth and successful transition

One of the more depressing interpretations that I read was that John actually died during his 'drowning game'; giving his family the ladder to escape the hole, getting rescued from the pool and having dinner with his family again were just products of his dying brain; his family then starved to death in the hole. I don't know whether that grim interpretation has any validity, but I guess it is one way to explain the ending. Anyway, I loved the movie's 'foreshadowimgs', ironies and dark humor.

I was very much interested in Lily and her mother than John.. the fact that there are no consequences ever, to his actions, makes John's story very surreal and not interesting... That bit about Lily tho... that's interesting. I would have loved it if my mom allowed me that freedom.. however not being able to ever get in touch with her again would ofc be heartbreaking.. I love my family I just really appreciate my freedom too. the moral of John's story is that family is important yet Lily's mom still leaves.. like... idk. It would have made more sense if she had asked lily if she wants her mom to stay or leave... also Lily is the opposite of john.. she wants her mom around so.. it would have made more sense to tell this story to someone like me rather than someone like my brother...
did enjoy it a lot... but like.. it takes a second to idk.. not make sense but like.. have a purpose...

I watched it, not a fan. There was no point to it. You had great actors. No doubt. The movie has no explanation. The little girl at the end two stories in one? It was a bad twilight zone. I hope the actors got paid very well for this. But I cant say I'd recommend anyone to watch it unless. I wanted to annoy that person. But its just my, one opinion.

Loved the ride. Despised the destination. This move had all the right ingredients and wasted them. Honestly this is a terrible film and it sounds like the short story is much better than this awful waste of time.
