In many ways the journey of the two soldiers in 1917 reminded me of Frodo and Sam taking the ring to Mordor. This mashup unsurprisingly works extremely well.

The Dead marshes in The Return of the King are inspired by what Tolkien saw on the fields fighting in WW1. My guess is that Mendes is a fan or inspired by Tolkien. Wouldn't be surprising. And thanks for the edit. Well done!
