Joe Biden picks ex-General Lloyd Austin as defence secretary

Joe Biden's transition to power continues.
He has nominated a retired general to be secretary of defence.
If confirmed, Lloyd Austin would become the first African American to lead the Pentagon.
The nomination has garnered much praise but also some concerns.

He is being selected because he is black. But listen to me for a second. He is the real deal. He has served in Command and support positions in front line Infantry Divisions throughout his career. He know more about ground operations than the civilians ever will. He is intellectually and leadership skill ability head and shoulders above several of the last Sec of Defense that got us into needless wars. He is very familiar with the hardships of Military service in time of war. He will make an outstanding Sec Of Defense.

I have no problem with the man's experience and character to be in this critical position. We need someone who has these attributes to step into the role. We already know what happens when people without relevant experience for the job get put into such positions... like, uh... the Department of Education Head... the Presidential position... (By the way, I'm neither black nor white, nor am I a veteran. I am a law-abiding citizen who always looks at merit/qualification for promotions.) Good luck, Gen. Austin.

Surely Joseph Biden knew that Lloyd Austin had served within the past 7 years and that he therefore can't be approved without a waiver? Why does he make it SO difficult for himself all the time? Diversity quotas, discrimination practises when forming a cabinet, choosing women because they're women, and choosing questionable candidates.

That said, apart from Lloyd having served recently, he seems clean and like a competent guy.
