5 tips for living Downtown Newark

Andrea McChristian moved to Newark in order to embed herself in the community served by the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, where she is assistant counsel. Andrea didn't waste any time making the most of her new community. Here are her tips for Downtown Newark newcomers.

I suffer from PTSD. I wasn't in the war, I grew up in Newark.

I was born & raised in Newark. Went to Arts High. Mom worked at Woolworths on Broad & Market in the 60's & 70's....she was the beautiful record shop lady. I partied in Newark in the late 70's early 80's - Mr. Wes', Lincoln Motel, etc. I worked at Prudential for a bit. My band was Ken Gibson's musical entourage for his re-election.in '76 or '77. My daughter & my sinlings were born at Martland - me at Beth. I moved away 20 years ago....but still have fam & friends there. All that said....downtown must be doing a LOT better....a whole lot better, than when I left. Go Newark!

I escaped from Newark in the 80's after crack ravaged the area. The stick up kids downtown were a problem too.

Thank you for a great review of my city. Im a life long resident born and raised here and I work here in the County Jail. I love my city. One day you have to try JFK recreation center. If you swim It is the largest indoor/outdoor Olympic sized pool in the state. The water is heated in the winter. Go west on West Kinney street and the place is on the right hand side the. Entrance is on Howard street. Just like every city we have our issues too but there is a lot of good in the city. Enjoy.

I never had any issues as a black woman
However, a fellow white intern was robbed.
