The FTC just banned non-compete agreements, making it illegal for bosses to make workers sign non-competes in almost every scenario. This is a game changer for American workers.

We talked to Lina Khan, the Chair of the Federal Trade Commission, about the new rule.

Now if a company wants you not to compete they'll need to pay you to stay.

Finally, people can move to different companies without getting sued

You can’t call it a free country and not let people change jobs.

This is good. A non compete without compensation should be illegal

It is absolutely anti-competitive behavior. It was already illegal. So happy to see this change.

I just got a non compete thrown in my face demanding I quit my new job.
Fuck those guys.
I worked 3 years and finished my 2 weeks notice.
Non-compete clauses only serve to shackle workers with lower wages.
Today the workers won.

CEOs leave all the time with golden parachutes to work for competitors. What we little people don't have the right to leave to a better competitor.

Non-compete agreements are anti-competitive. It's literally in the name. Keep it up, Lina!

I got to meet her when she spoke at my college. I'm so proud we have someone this smart and with the right values heading the FTC

Companies always claim they support free-market competition until the power dynamic changes. Then they reveal their true beliefs by honestly praising monopolies.

The fact that the Chamber of Commerce is suing the FTC over this shows you whos allied with big corporations in suppressing wages.

This has a deep place in my heart. I worked as an unarmed security guard/dispatcher making horrible wages ($8/hr) and I had to sign a non-compete.
After getting a better paying job not even in the area of security, I was sent a legal letter threatening a lawsuit that I had violated the NC.
For $8/hr people. *8 bucks an hour PART TIME*
I kindly responded to that legal letter by telling them to eat s**t.
I was told by the owner of the company that I was one of their best workers by the way.

Note that, in an economy where employers will refuse to give raises and promotions to workers 9/10 times, but will hire new workers at higher rates, the ONLY way for many folk to get a raise and stay in their field is to take a new job elsewhere.

the Reward for Loyalty to a Corpo is ALWAYS more work for less pay

Non-compete for fast food workers and hair stylists? Just a way to limit people's work options and suppress wages.

Companies do non compete clauses because they don't want to compete for higher salaries. That why most people leave is another company willing to pay more. They want people to stay off the market for 2 years so their skills become obsolete and destroy their careers. Thanks FTC. You freed lot of people.

Hell yeah! I ignored my non compete agreement started my own company a few years ago and roughly doubled my wages. If you are on the fence, go for it!

I work in the tech sector, and there are restrictions upon what I can do with proprietary information, but if our competitor comes at me with a better offer I can take it and start working right away. There is no reason for a fast food worker or security guard to have a non-compete. What are you gonna to...give Taco Bell the McDonald's secret sauce recipe?

This is huge. My friend’s dad is a heart physician in a smaller area of Michigan. They’ve had budget cuts and put him on leave (there was no issues) he’s been lawyered up and he’s one amazing physician - but they won’t let him go to another hospital. They’ve even withheld his pay!
