Like a broken glass, you can glue the pieces back together, but that crack is there forever. They took my kindness, my friendship, my love, my trust, and in return, they gave me pain, lies, manipulation, and broken promises. But in the end, they taught me a valuable lesson... that the only person in this world that I can truly trust is myself

Spot on. For me, Christian programming of turn the other cheek, forgive, be kind was just a way to try to earn love and self-worth from others because I had none of my own. "See how nice and giving I am? I'm a good person. Aren't I worthy of love?"

If you want to love your neighbor as yourself, you've got to love yourself first. Otherwise you'll be a sacrificial lamb bleating about how you've been wronged right before the slaughter.
