-- LYRICS --

At the core of the earth
It's too hot to breathe
There's nothing much to eat
And everybody leaves
There’s a place in the forest
Where the animals dance
Carefree and joyous
Like nobody's watching
And nobody's watching

So they laugh and they dance around mahogany trees
Completely unawares they’re gonna end up as meat
And nobody's watching

Wake up
Wake up
Try better next time
Wake up
Wake up
Cry better next time

Wake up
Wake up
Try better next time
Wake up
Wake up

So, you know me
Understand me
Is that what you think?
You haven't met the monster who wakes up when I drink
I was born out of time
I'm not meant to be here
With the weight of the world
And the weight of a tear
Are exactly the same

Wake up
Wake up
Try better next time
Wake up
Wake up
Cry better next time

Wake up
Wake up
Try better next time
Wake up
Wake up

Wake up
Wake up
Try better next time
Wake up
Wake up
Cry better next time

Wake up
Wake up
Try better next time
Wake up
Wake up

There's a spot in the ocean
And that’s where we’ll meet
Somewhere far away
Where fish can nibble at our feet
And we can grow fins
Go back in the water
Grow fins go back in the water
Grow fins go back in the water
Grow fins go back in the water

Wake up
Wake up
Try better next time
Wake up
Wake up
Cry better next time

Wake up
Wake up
Try better next time
Wake up
Wake up

Wake up
Wake up
Try better next time
Wake up
Wake up
Cry better next time

Wake up
Wake up
Try better next time
Wake up
Wake up

It’s a gas, it’s a party
On this planet of flakes
Somebody take a picture
Before it's too late

Became a fan kind of by accident back in late 1998. I had seen advert posters for WYIN and was curious about who they were and what they sounded like but didn't know anyone who had heard of them until I ended up moving in with a bandmate in SF. He was listening to the first album (don't recall the song at the moment) and I remember hearing this high-pitched vocal that sounded a bit like Geddy Lee from Rush (not a bad thing, I love Rush). I remember asking him, "hey, is that a new Rush album?". He, of course replied, "No, this is Placebo". He let me borrow his copy of the first album that he was playing so I could confirm for myself. Immediately after, I went to Virgin Megastore and bought both albums out at the time. Been a fan ever since. Saw them live in late 2003. The show kinda saved my life in a way. I was going thru a very messy break-up and was having feelings of checking out from life. Something about hearing them live kinda made me feel better. The icing on the cake was that I got to meet them after the show. They were all so humble and amazing. We talked only briefly since I didn't want to keep them. Anyhow, I've bought every album since I became a fan. Every album, better than the last.

You have truly saved my life. I have been listening for 21 years & have never felt the lyrics and melodies as much as I do with your music. Every pitch, every frequency, every chord...has done nothing but save me from everything.

I may not have any faith in humanity left...but I have all the faith in you guys.

It seems unlikely you'll read this, but: Thank you, Brian and Stefan, for always giving words and melody to emotions that feel like an indescribable ball of razor wire in my chest. I was born in '89 and I feel like you've always been there to show love, show fear, show gender in a way that spoke to me as a transmasculine person. This song is climate catharsis I desperately needed. Thanks for that. Gonna go cry now.

Thanks for the new album and thanks for the 2003 Paris concert, I remember well, but I never was. I can be when I turn on. Good morning Placebo in 2022.

I have a feeling I'm adding to my Placebo tattoo again, I've probably listened to this song a few hundred times since the single released. Favorite band since I was 10, I'm 31 now.

I love when he mentions his past history with addiction even if it's just a single line in the lyrics, I'm almost 10 years sober and it's inspiring to hear it from him.

I was finally able to purchase the CD. I just started listening to the CD now. The songs here are easy to remember, even for me, an Asian, to hum along in English. I listen to the songs more than the lyrics, and I also listen to the drums a lot, as well as the guitar.

Didn’t expect this to be that perfect after all these years and they’ve never missed a single beat, it’s like they haven’t even peaked yet
