LED Current Limiting Resistor - Why? - How Big? (Solved and Simulated)

Don't burn out your LEDs! Learn how much resistance to add in series.

In this video tutorial we simulate an LED with a current limiting resistor.

So I'm just gonna drag an LED and drag it onto my workbench, and a resistor. Hook them up with a wire. Lets drag a voltage source on and make it a 5 V voltage source and hook up the wires. I'm going to add a couple of named nodes. Call this one A, and this one B just so I can visualize my output a little better later.

Then I go to my simulate tab and click on A and B so I can see what the value is at those nodes. Then click on the DC solver and see you have real values. I also want to see the current going into my LED here because that tells me how bright its gonna be, and I see I have about 28mA which is a bit too bright. Hit Esc to hop out of simulation mode, and lets make the resistor a little bigger. Let's make the resistor a little bigger. Then hit F5 to rerun the last simulation, and now its about 15 mA which is pretty good. And that's how you do it, that's how you simulate an LED with a current limiting resistor.

This was really helpful and straight to it, thanks!

This tool is awesome. Having no formal electronic education, I've always been intimidated by simulators. I just completed this lesson along with the video, simple, no complex formulas and direct.

There's a LOT of devices listed on the BUILD panel, so I can only assume this can help me develop circuits for a long time.

Congrats CircuitLab! You've made another fan.

Circuit Lab is GREAT ... Well worth the cost to Upgrade ... Really enjoy the suggestion/tutorial emails and 'Ultimate Electronics' Online book. Thank You!!

Where did this video address the 'why'?

For a tutorial, it would be nice if you said what keyboard shortcuts you are using

Why is ground required? If this was an actual circuit with a real battery, resistor and LED there wouldn't be a ground. Thanks. :-)

Did not work for me! Ran out of time and it kicked me out - VERY LAME!

you are pretty fast at doing all the steps and in talking. That is not the way a good teacher would explain it

please don't use mechanical keyboards when recording videos
