Story Points vs. Time Estimation ⏱ Or maybe we can just convert story points to time?

I've always emphasized that one point is not equivalent to one day, hour, or any specific time frame. The whole idea behind using story points is to avoid the direct correlation with time, and here's why 👆

this is a genuine question, why use abstract points instead of something intuitive like a time estimate? a project may take more time (or points) than you would have guessed. either way, you have to make-up for that wrong estimate.
addendum: at least with time estimates, we could know how much time something would take, and then estimate based on that

Any estimation will have some time line against the story points. It will be different for each team. Otherwise just story point number will not make any sense. When I say 5 story point, on back of my mind I plan for the hours days or minutes

If you don't know how much time it will take, then say so instead of using a made up estimation system, do your research and get back to the lead. This seems very stupid and like it defeats the purpose of estimation, but that's just coming from a former aircraft structural mechanic supervisor...

dont see the point of this amorphous abstract roundabout way of estimation. Everything in the real world revolves around time and cost. If something is more complex, it will take more time. It is infinitely more useful for literally everyone involved, and more importantly the customer, for them to know this will take 5 days to build, therefore we will bill you as such. The single situation where this doesn't apply is hobby projects, where the profitability of the project as not as pertinent, and even still knowing how long it will take is still way more useful.
