In the U.S., we call "the grid" an area model -- because it's the idea of length x width. I prefer it over the long division algorithm as well. I'm more of a visual and conceptual math learner. Even if I'm forced to do long division, I think about it in terms of an area model/grid. I honestly don't understand why so many people seem to prefer long division.
