I like using Christopher Booker's "The Seven Basic Plots" to come up with a system. He has a basic outline for each plot type. For instance, with the Overcoming the Monster Plot, the steps are: The Call, Initial Success, Confrontation, Final Ordeal, and Miraculous Escape. It's a very very long book, but well worth it if you've got the time.
