Here are my thoughts on the book. I'm sure I'll have more the more I think about it and when I reread it in the future. But let's start here.

Great review!
Sounds like a complex, but also really good book. Definitely one I'll keep in mind. First I want to read 'Everything is Illuminated' & maybe also 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close' though.
(Hoping to read 'Everything is Illuminated' before the end of the year.)

Great review, thank you! I was a bit hesitant to pick up this book, but it sounds like it's worth it.

I'm about 400 pages through and I am enjoying it. I do agree on that you have to concentrate while reading it and I just find it so sad at times, and that for me, is the emotionally drained part. The lack of communication, how the children see it all and the still very insecure adults in this makes me want to cry. And yes, it feels real and I really enjoy the writing.
Good review

Finished it two hours ago! The best part for me, were the children, who were perfectly moving and funny. Irv as well. My favourite from Safran Foer is still Everything is Illuminated, which made me laugh wildly and cry rivers.

Thanks for the excellent and insightful review. Which would you suggest as the best to get started with Foer's work? thx.

I have only read his non-fiction book Eating Animals, which has affected my life quite a bit. I have not been tempted to read his fiction, but I do not doubt it has been very philosophical.

I might pick it up later on. It seems like prior knowledge of previous books is a necessity.

Hi, I just finish reading this too! I am not a native English speaker. Sometimes I am confused about some of his expression.

For example, in the beginning paragraph, the Christian who is "half a world and three-quarters of a century away", does it mean this person is that far away now? or does it mean "if we put this situation at that time, he would..."...?

I would be really grateful if anyone can answer this problem?

Interesting story... From my experience with the author I think of him as a challenging read that will be complicated :P
