The Worst Ubuntu Release In Years (21.10)

Показать описание
Ubuntu 21.10 was just released so I thought I would take it for a quick spin. I've always been a big fan of Ubuntu. It was the first desktop Linux distribution that I used when I switched away from Windows, so it has a special place in my heart. But increasingly, I wonder about Ubuntu's decisions...

Linus: Everything is a file
Canonical: Everything is a snap

This is what happens when you go full snapcraft, you never go full snapcraft.

The problem with distros abandoning Firefox is that puts all the eggs in the chromium basket.

I've been using Ubuntu since 2005 and it's amazing that, this entire time, I've had a flawless experience with apt on the command line - but software management in the GUI has *always* been awful, somehow

The strong and complicated password gag gets me every time lmao

I hop from LTS to LTS. I let Ubuntu team experiment and the cutting edge fans test these transitional releases. And I'm thankful for these releases despite not using myself.

Interesting thing with the preinstalled software.
Here's my guess what's happening:

Software companies try to determine which software to install by using telemetry.
Power users disable Telemetry.
Normal users do not use htop or vim, but they have telemetry enabled.
Software companies only get feedback from non-power users
Software companies work on the premise that nobody installs vim or htop

So no vim or htop gets preinstalled

The categories in Software Center looks "empty" while they're loading. They really should implement a spinning circle or something because it can take quite a while for each category to load, the same happens for me on 20.04

Imo it's good that firefox is the default browser on most distros as every other major browser is based on chromium. It's good to have competition when it comes to browser engines.

Yes let's update a standard distro for the masses who just want to browse the internet with a garbage snap install of Firefox. Let's make it take longer to start up the browser. Not out of touch at all.

You cannot judge OS Performance with a VM.

Wow, how the tables turned, KDE plasma on the other hand these days is just awesome and has a small footprint on ram usage. It's lightweight, extremely customizable and beautiful.

Was never a fan of Ubuntu. In all the years of using Linux, Ubuntu has always been the most annoying to me. Thank goodness for openSUSE.

Before my tests: DT is overreacting, it can't be that bad.
After my tests: My God! Something is very wrong with Ubuntu.

So it was actually a good thing I went with Mint as my first distro 🍵

Firefox's popularity is actually stable these days, if at a low level.

I switched from Ubuntu to Debian 11 recently after years of using Ubuntu... Much better now: Vanilla Gnome, stable and tested desktop environment and most important: no snaps to mess around. Please Canonical, make Firefox ESR and Chromium Deb Packages again!

I have not recommended Ubuntu for a long time now. 5 years at least. Linux Mint is what I use for people that need a user friendly distro. Ubuntu just doesn't fit the Linux community, in my opinion. And no, I don't like snaps either.

11:44 "And this is what i preach to you guys all the time […] people think that the terminal and the command line is so much harder, so much difficult but guess what […]"
15:58 "Is it uninstall or ist it remove? I can't remember this if snap is the same as apt."

If you confuse the semantics of apt and snap, how will my grandma manage to do that? If Linux wants to ever achieve any significant success in the mainstream as a desktop operating system, such things simply have to work flawlessly via the GUI. A normal user must be able to do everything without ever being forced to open a terminal. As long as that is not the case, Linux has no chance of succeeding on the desktop.
