If you're ever asked "Does this make my butt look fat?" Play this song...and run! :D

THE SONG - "Fat Bottomed Girls" is a song by the British rock / glam-rock band Queen. It was written by guitarist Brian May for the band's seventh studio album 'Jazz' which was recorded between July and October 1978 at Mountain Studios in Montreux and Super Bear Studios in France. The song was released, as a double A-side single, on Oct 13, 1978 with "Bicycle Race", written by Freddie Mercury, while the album 'Jazz' was released on Nov 10, 1978. The band had been advised to reside outside of the UK for a year for tax purposes so 'Jazz' became their first album to be fully recorded abroad.

The album 'Jazz' reached #6 on the Billboard 200 chart on Jan 6, 1979 In the UK it reached #2. As a double A-side single both "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "Bicycle Race" share the same chart history and entered Billboard's Hot 100 at #70 on Nov 11, 1978, peaked at #24 on Jan 13, 1979 and was last seen at #96 on Jan 27, 1979 with 12 weeks on the chart. On the UK singles chart, it entered at #27 on Oct 28, 1978 and peaked at #11 on Nov 25, 1978.

The inspiration for "Fat Bottomed Girls" apparently was May's preference for women with plump posteriors. However, he told 'Mojo' magazine, "I wrote it with Fred in mind, as you do especially if you've got a great singer who likes fat bottomed girls… or boys. On the face of it, it's a heterosexual song because it's called "Fat Bottomed Girls", but I was totally aware of Freddie's proclivities and the fact he was going to sing it. Plus, some of the inspiration for the song came from stuff that I saw in Freddie's life as well as my own. So it's actually not so much of a heterosexual song as you might think (laughs). It's a sort of pansexual song. There are so many ways you can take it."

Neither the album nor the song escaped controversy and were not exactly critically acclaimed. Like some of their earlier albums, critics called it overcooked and pretentious. 'Rolling Stone' had a particularly scathing review by Dave Marsh who wrote ""Fat Bottomed Girls" treated women "not as sex objects but as objects, period (the way the band regards people in general)." 'Creem' magazine called the album "dull" with "dumb ideas and imitative posturing."

In a more recent video, Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor react to the official video of "Fat Bottomed Girls". Brian said, "Ah, it's just about fat bottomed girls really. Of whom there were many that we knew from the road. They didn't actually have to have fat bottoms, it was just a kind of generic term. It's a fun song. There are other things underneath. There are always sort of dark threads, I think, in most people's songs."

May and Taylor were unhappy with the official video. Roger said, "We got very fed up with all these ridiculously contrived ideas for videos that people were coming up with by then." The band apparently were not that happy with the album either. In 1980, Taylor was quoted, "We felt 'Jazz' was not one of our finest hours. It had its moments, but on the whole, it was rather unsatisfying."

Sina has always had a high regard for Roger's drumming calling him one of her all-time drum heroes. For this song she told Rosanna, "What is very interesting about this song is the very fast drum fill around 2:15. It's a very easy fill, theoretically. Of course it's not that easy to play in this tempo, but it's very easy to understand. Most drummers always try to find or make up good fills for their songs, but sometimes the easiest option is the best one... I've always found this fascinating about "Fat Bottomed Girls."

Sina has four previous Queen drum covers and a tutorial covering the style of Roger Meddows Taylor. Check them out -

Sina,
You aren't the only one. I think EVERYBODY needs a little Queen in their life once in a while.

It just amazes me how Sina coordinates in her brain left hand, right hand, head bob, right foot, left foot and internal heart beat to keep rhythm going. Even more so, I do wonder how much kcal Sina burns after playing one song. I personally get exhausted watching her go through one song. But she does it with a smile, and wearing a dress. Thank you for your talent.

Saw Queen perform this live in the ‘80’s. Still the best show I’ve seen. Great drum cover.

Perfect drum kit choice and played well. It's nice to see drummers recreate the style or vibe of this era of rock and prog.

Nice 😉🍀🍀
