I have two topics in this video. I talk about the 30-06 Springfield and its offspring. Including the 270 Winchester, 280 Remington, 35 Whelen, 50 Browning Machine Gun, 280 Ackely Improved. And indirectly the 250 Savage, 300 Savage, 308, 30 Thompson Center, and 6.5 Creedmoor.

Savage wanted the government contract. In 1920, Savage came out with the 300 Savage and a new bolt action rifle. It was a short action Springfield and could use stripper clips to load it. The 300 Savage was loaded with a 150 grain bullet at 2670 fps. This was only 30 fps slower that the military 30-06 at that time. The model 1920 Savage is an excellent carrying rifle and it only weighted 6 1/2 lbs. Unfortunately, Savage only made them from 1920-1929, in 250 and 300 Savage.

🤠 H4350 in the 30-06 with a 180 grain Swift A-Frame would be hard combination to beat! 🤗 Today, I commented on Austin's (Reloading Weatherby) video regarding the 6.8 Western vs. the 7mm prc, before watching this video (and briefly discussed some reasons why I would still choose the 30-06 Winchester and 270 Winchester over either of them)! Some of the real questions to ask yourself include: how much power do I really need, how far do I intend to shoot, what are the easiest cartridges to get ammunition and rifle components for, what is the cheapest to shoot, can I get the cartridge in the gun I prefer, and will the cartridge even be around a decade from now? When you examine all the options, most people continue to conclude that a 270 Winchester or a 30-06 Springfield is all "you/they" need! After trying those "other options" and seeing that the animals that I shot couldn't tell the difference, but the Bigger Magnum Calibers wasted more meat unnecessarily (but didn't kill the animals any faster), I returned to the 270 and 30-06! I realized that my Grandfather's (one hunted with a 270 and the other a 30-06) were right all along - I really didn't "need" anything else! 😜

I agree. 280 ackley has a lot to offer. I’m not a guy that likes bragging about sniping game half a mile away. So i would really be happy to own a 284 winchester for everything. I believe it would be very versatile. And there’s really nothing bad i can say about it. I just wish it would get popular again. And then catch on in the gun community. I don’t think it ever got the respect it deserved.

Another great video. The whole 30-06 family is great and I'm building out the 338-06 and 35 Whelen now to try it with bigger bores.
