To be fair, China makes a lot of expensive products more accessible for average people. I remember how expensive those things were before China made them, like phones. Now it’s cars’ turn

I had a 2018 Volvo S90 T6 AWD Inscription that was manufactured in China. Bought it in 2021 and sold it recently after owning it for two years. Loved everything about it and it made no negative difference that it was made in China. They use the same quality control as in Europe. Replaced it with a 2019 BMW i3. My first EV and love it!

Even the Mini moved to China to make their EV Mini! Most advance EV are from China.

I'd buy a Chinese car over German car any time. Not because it's cheaper but because Chinese make higher quality cars then German cars, and more honest.

Thanks Sam, good informative item. Most EU brands work with China to build some models in China.
Indeed also most French car brands like Renault, Peugeot and even Citroen has 1 ICE model build in China.
Not the Citroën ë-C3 though, that is the cheapest EV with a 320km range and 100kW charging + LFP battery, that is totally build in the EU (Slowakia).
Below €24.000 without incentives and a B-segment EV

As a Croatian I would never buy a car that isn't from China. And whenever possible I buy every product possible from China.

The "heart" of all European and American EVs are made in China, heart being the battery. LOL.

Another major advantage of manufacturing in China which is lesser talked about is proximity to ASEAN countries are 650 million people GDP growing at 5% annually. Millions in ASEAN are ethnic Han Chinese. It's a a natural to take over this Japanese dominant market as a first stop.

Would love to get the Dacia Spring here in the USA. Even with the latest price cuts and tax rebates, the price of base Tesla Model 3 after the 10% sales tax is about $36k (after tax rebates). The Dacia Spring would be around $22k here.

I bought a can opener (twisting type) that says Made In Australia, more expensive ($15)but thinking because it's from Australia, quality must be good. Wth the moment I turned the cutting wheel, it came apart. I was livid as I had bought it thinking it will last longer. Fed up, I went to my nearby stores to get a Made in China and also a China brand. It was just $5 so if it breaks again I'd feel less heartache! But I've used it quite many times and it's still good! My prejudice about Made in China goods have somewhat changed and so at least for non big ticket items, I've no problem getting a Chinese brand. The LG Korean brand washing machine (good brand right?) I'm not satisfied though. I might very well get a cheaper Chinese brand to see whether it holds up as well (not that I know of any Chinese brand washing machine). Some of these more famous brands are not performing up to my expectations, quite disappointing!

Add in components. In effect some cars have quite a few parts made in China and shipped to the builders in the EU.

I've had so many customers get angry when I tell them they didn't buy the car company they thought ! Ford Festiva made by KIA. Mercury Villager with Nissan engine. BMW with GM transmission. Fords with Mazda transmission. Jaquar with Ford engines. Toyota with Subaru engine. Toyota with BMW engine. Ford & GM using the same transmissions. Your just not buying what you think these days.

I am quite glad that I live in Hong Kong. Buy goods from china with our salary is very nice. We got 100 dollar tv. Used it for a few years, throw it away, get a bigger, better one. I feel like a king when I go shop from taobao.

iPhone is also made in China. Most people don’t see it as a Chinese phone.

I am not sure why people would think this, perhaps they don’t do reviews. The only difference I can see is that global makers control the output from their factories, no matter where they are located, and they control development, engineering and design seperate but intertwined with the manufacturing process. I am sure Chinese brands are the same too. You have spoken about this topic so many times before that now it might be a good time to point out the manufacturers who still build in their homeland and what models they produce there. You have gone some way to this end in this report (in a reverse way). That would be interesting, but perhaps that would be getting away from EVs too much. 😊

No one I know thinks Dacia is French.
