How was the Second Death Star Different from the First?

How was the second Death Star different from the first? What improvements did Moff Jerjerrod make to the design? According to Jerjerrod’s story in Return of the Jedi From a Certain Point of View, the new superweapon’s design exceeded its predecessor in size, power, and efficiency. Star Wars Legends says the second Death Star was one hundred twenty five percent larger, and its superlaser was able to recharge in only three minutes, compared to the first iteration’s twenty four hour recharge time. But the most important change Jerjerrod made surrounded the thermal exhaust port, for obvious reasons. Thanks to Rogue One we know that Galen Erso built a fail safe into the Death Star’s main reactor. And maybe the only way for a torpedo to reach a reactor module was through the two meter wide thermal exhaust port. For the second Death Star, Jerjerrod removed the single, larger port and replaced them with millions of miniscule tubes that stretched from the core of the station to the surface, allowing heat to escape. He also built what he referred to as choke points and fail safes into the system to prevent any chain reaction from reaching the main reactor. #starwars

When I first started watching Star Wars I originally thought that the second Death Star and the first were One and the same, in ep 4 the Rebels blew it up but it didn’t get completely destroyed- rather it got damaged hence why it looked unfinished in ep 6. Even thought this isn’t the case, I personally love the idea.

Still makes more sense that the port was not a flaw.
The fact that it was the reason is just so unbelievable that it could be exploited.

The fact that it was only 2 meters wide and could support a moon sized battle station alone is massivvely impressive.

First for it be be destroyed, you would need a ship to get in very close range while being targeted by tractor beams, and many many lasers. Or in the case of the rebels, have enough people to draw fire to allow a ship to get close.

Then it needs to navigate a slim trench avout 4 ships wide, for several kilometres.
Now its a space ship thats not that far.

But you need to go slow enough to be able to make a shot, also while being shot at by more lasers, and worry about any fighters that have been dispatched to interupt your attack.

Then after that you need to make a flawless shot with perfect timing, a feat even the best pilots would struggle with.

Then the missles need to have traveled hundreds if not thousands of kilometres stright down a 2 metere wide tube.

While also fighting the exhaust rushing in the opposite direction.
Because exhaust means to push out.

And the only reason all this failed is due to a manned mission that had an extreme amount of casualties, and needed a force user with some of the best potential in the force to make the shot.

(Also im fine with the falcon flying into the second death star, it was still not near completion and most of its building was focused on making the weapon systems operational.)

That thing is literally in space Space is freezing cold and you still need cooling systems For the reactor core 😕🤔

Less we forget the Scotch Guard Rebel Repellent he had it painted with....

How would you get heat to escape the reactor in a vacuum. Only conduction and radiation would work so why would a thermal exhaust port be needed In a vacuum???

125% larger? So over twice the size? Or 25% larger?

In the novel “Death Star” (part of the discontinued Star Wars EU prior to the Disney acquisition) the exploited exhaust port was left in the design due to bureaucratic red tape often found in government dealings. Basically, it was a known flaw but several different internal entities assumed that one of the others would fix it. If you’ve ever worked for even a local government governed company like a public school on up, then IYKYK. 😂

Q: In either canonical references or expanded legends multiverse references, was the second Death Star (II) ever used against a planet or planetoid? It appears as though its only known offensive use was against Rebel Flagships at the Battle of Endor.. yes? Please advise, thx.

You're mixing Legends and canon. In Legends, the flaw of the death start, its single exhaust port, wasn't put intentially but imperial engineers didn't think it would be a problem, not to mention that a fighter damaging it was very unlikely and Luke managed to do that only because he was force-sensitive.

Too bad they left massive passages straight to the reactor that were big enough to have a dog fight in. Seems like that probably should have been the first thing on the checklist prior to inciting a fight with plot armoured individuals

He just left tunnels to the main reactor that ships could fly to. They should have kept it hidden(Palpatine shouldn't have allowed the info to leak) until it was completed. I wish they had a current game that had both death star runs as levels. Endor could have started at the beginning and you had to work your way to and into the death star. Same music and everything. The Falcon, A-wings, Y-wings and my favorite the B-wings.

Moff Jerrod was nearly played by Alan Rickman

Yeah, instead of a thermal-exhaust port, the second Death Star had massive tunnels through which fighters and even small freighters could easily fly straight into the station's power-reactor core unrestricted. So much better.

They desided to fix the exhaught port issue by adding one big enough for a star ship to fly through

First Death Star took 20 years to build and the second one took 4 years to build. I'd say he did the impossible and should be praised for it.

There even being a second death star bothers me so much

And yet left a large enough hole for a whole ass spaceship to fit into that leads directly into the reactor.

I mean, they could have prevented the first one being destroyed by just putting a grating on the exhaust port, but what ever

I hate how they got the Imperial rank boards wrong in ROTJ

The second death star would have fallen apart on its own considering the amount of shortcuts, bodges, and workarounds to get it finished to the emperors ridiculous time limits - he was not an engineer
