The 54-year-old actor had tears running down his face as he earned the Best Actor gong for his work on The Whale in what was the most emotional moment of the night at the event which featured a star-studded red carpet. He beat out an impressive field which included: Austin Butler – Elvis, Tom Cruise – Top Gun: Maverick, Colin Farrell – The Banshees of Inisherin, Paul Mescal – Aftersun, and Bill Nighy – Living.
