You were out the door the instant your parents deemed you acceptably bundled up. The woods behind your house was a new and unexplored land now, the familiar landscape barely recognizable beneath its snowy disguise. You clambered through the trees, filled with excitement. There were snowmen to build, igloos to fortify, hills to sled, snowballs to pelt at the other children. The cold, silent air was filled with laughter and shrieks of snow day delight. Only when the light began to fade did you return home. Someone has decked the house in lights during your absence, and it glows like a beautiful jewel amongst the trees. You throw your sleds on the lawn and head in. Everyone is home and every room is full of activity. Someone is hovering over the stove in the kitchen, stirring something that smells delicious. Someone is drinking cocoa and watching the snow, which has once again begun to softly fall. Someone is sitting on the couch warming themselves before a crackling fire, bathed in the lights from the Christmas tree. Upstairs, someone is playing Christmas carols on the piano, and the music wafts throughout the house. You feel a powerful sleepiness take over you. Soon you’ll be carried to bed, so tired from the fun you had today that you can barely lift your head. You’ll curl up and sleep, safe and warm in your flannel sheets, as the music softly drifts into your dreams....*
