I work on this island and drive by this every day multiple times. Many of the older structures are being replaced on the island nowadays.

People need to understand that old homes can have a lot of problems that are very expensive to fix. Foundation issues, wood rot, structural issues, termite and insect damage, leaking plumbing, lead paint, asbestos, you name it. Add in an obsolete layout that simply doesn't work, and it is often cheaper and faster to just start from scratch.

I fucking hate this. I live in Florida, in an old neighborhood. I see beautiful 1910s homes getting destroyed every day just to build 2 or 3 tall and ugly modern houses that the owners can charge obscenely high rent for. It’s scary. All anyone can do is pray they’re not next.

EDIT: To the comments that say “well they could have had structural issues, so it’s better that they were taken down, ” consider this…
I TOURED AND INSPECTED a house a couple blocks down from where I live currently, because we were thinking about moving there (we ended up moving to my present house). In my own inspection of the house I found no problems, but we ended up choosing my current house because it was closer to school, work, etc.
Just three short years later, the house was torn down to build three “toothpick houses”.
You may say “An issue could have cropped up between then and now, ” but hear this: a problem like rot, mold or termites is a slow-burn problem that wouldn’t reduce a healthy, century-old, virgin-timber house like that to splinters in three years.
Face it. It’s the land development corporations that buy the small, old houses on a large lot, demolish them regardless of their health because it apparently won’t sell well to modern buyers. Then they build cheap, slender houses on the lot, each one double the original price of the old house, and then they capitalize.
Eventually, those houses will blow away in the next Florida hurricane, and the only one who will win will be the developers who scammed everyone. They scammed the homeowners by selling them overpriced toothpick houses, and scammed the city by killing a historic home.

For people that don't live in the area: people are buying up the smaller, modest homes to build these larger homes not for themselves, but to use them as rentals. You'll see 15 people stream out of these homes going straight to the beach. It's making the island less quaint and quiet and more touristy and making beach access more difficult.

I have been going to Anna Maria for my whole life every winter break and spring break, it used to be much more traditional and a pretty chill place that not many people knew about. Now new modern houses like this one keep appearing and the vibe has changed and the island has become much more populated. If I could go back and stop whoever made Anna Maria Island the way it is today I would.
