I sold my 5k iMac 2017 (40GB RAM + 2TB fusion drive) and swapped it with a base M1 MacBook Air at pretty much the same price and use my external monitor that was sitting around. I was skeptical of getting a 8GB air but after some testing it is still faster than my iMac for most jobs as the M1 and full SSD is helping tremendously. So far I am happy with the choice and although I lost that beautiful 5k screen, I can now also carry around a power workhorse! Got myself a 1TB WD external SSD for only $130 and I'm all set!

Running a 2012 MacBook that has a 250GB hard drive and the last iPad I owned was an iPad 2. Thinking now is that my next device would be the large iPad Pro or maybe a Mac Mini with the newer chip. There will be a huge difference for me going from iPad 2 to the current or next generation iPad Pro. My wife has the original 11" iPad Pro and I'm always kind of jealous of the sound quality she gets. Exciting times for all technology.

Just got a new update for M1 Mac mini. Now photoshop starts just in 2 seconds, no lag at switching sky and so on. Very cool!

Thanks for the review. it will be nice to see a review of daily multitasking apps of a creator, graphic designer, like 30-40 tabs of chrome and 3-4 adobe apps.

I just got the new M1 on 16GB RAM and 512GB of SSD, and I have just installed/updated the new native version of PS onto my Macbook Pro and I am good to go. I am loving the speed of the M1 and I am looking forward to processing my photos on the latest version of PS with the New enhanced feature in ACR for sharpening my images. I'm also using a Samsung SSD T7 for storage, so as not to fill out my storage in the macbook, allowing it to run optimally. My old macbook was just too slow and I was not able to install new updates of PS, so I could not wait any longer for the new M1 X or whatever they will name it. I'm loving this macbook and I am not complaining. Do not hesitate, just get it, unless you actually hate the old chassis.

Hi, a bit off topic. Which M1 iMac model would you recommend for painting in Photoshop?

My wife is a photographer and she is currently using a Intel i7-6700 with 16 ram. I want to get her a MacBook air pro m1 16gb . Would the Mac be a huge difference? Would it end up saving her lots of time so she could edit more sessions in the same amount of time? Any help greatly appreciated!

Hi Colin, Great review, I have been waiting for Photoshop before replacing my MacBook Pro 2012, which is running so so slowly, we are talking more like hours than minutes to do anything if it doesn’t crash! The MacBook Air seems to have the same spec and is cheaper so will probably go for that.

Could you comment on whether ACR and Bridge are optimised for M1?

While calculating 1:1 previews in Lightroom (10.3) my 8GB M1 uses all it´s power - so surfing, watching youtube etc. is hardly possible. 16GB seems not to be way faster - but does it allow other tasks better while calculating 1:1 previews e.g. ?

Hi 😊 Thanks so much for this video but if I may ask, I need to buy a desktop computer urgently. Is the M1 MacMini 16GB / 512GB + a fast external M.2 ... still a good buy, for Photoshop and Lightroom? It has to last me 5 years. Thanks in advance for your reply 🙏🏽😊

Well, I took your advice. I did wait and I just ordered the Apple Macbook Pro 16-inch
Apple M1 Max chip with 10-core CPU, 32-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine
64GB unified memory
4TB SSD storage
16-inch Liquid Retina XDR display
I know you may not have done a video review on this one but sure am thankful for your advice to wait!

What Performance Settings for Photoshop should I use with a Mac Mini M2 and 16gig Ram? I mostly use Lightroom Classic and occasionally send an image from Lightroom to Photoshop and then Back to Lightroom. I rarely use more than 5 layers in PS. I use 24 meg Raw camera files.. Can you give advice on how to setup Photoshop and Lightroom Classic for this? Thank you!

Hi Colin, Just bought the m1 with 16gb. Miss the 27" but very fast and affordable. My usual photoshop images are 500mb at 24"x36" 300 ppi files. Is the 16gb enough ram? My activity monitor showed I was using 12gb with only 1 image up. Thx so much! Love your videos!
