During cold war many locations on the german Autobahn were planned to be used as temporary airfields if the actual army airfields would run out of space because of all the NATO aircraft that would've needed to be stationed in germany. One of those temporary airstrips was a part of the Autobahn A29 in northwestern germany near the city (and former air base) of Ahlhorn. Unlike most of the other Autobahn parts the NLP II/7 was actually used for that purpose. In 1984 a NATO exercise was held at that site to test the concept of the temporary highway airfields which ended up being very successful and promising.
