Hi @Linus and @Luke: I am a developer for the last 15 years. One of the things I see ChatGPT replacing is offshore development houses / contractors. Many times large companies use offshore coding houses / contractors to brute force a ton of code generation and then have onshore developer go over and clean it up before putting it in production (or worse put it in production and then have onshore clean it up later), I can easily see ChatGPT being used for that large code generation and then normal developers c/eaning it up.

Hey Luke, really enjoying you hosting videos again! You're so natrual on camera in a way that not many other presenters on LTT are. Would love to see ya more often :)

As a software developer, here are my inputs for ChatGPT.

1. For people that doesn't know, GitHub has a thing called copilot. It assist devs by providing code based on what a developers comments about what the code will do. Almost the same thing with ChatGPT.

2. A director from our company suggested using it. He heard multiple feedbacks about copilot's increase in user productivity (defining what the function's scope is, say how to access the application config of a project) and copilot providing the needed code for it.

3. It's a tool, a very advance and confident tool. And as Luke already stated last week, it is confident about it's answers, either that answer is right or wrong. It's our job to use this tool as a springboard in a direction without the extra steps of going to google and checking multiple source of the same answer.

For people thinking this will replace actual developers in the field. Only incompetent companies would do that just to save money. Actual companies still needs us to validate what it gives it's users. Again also stated by Luke last week. GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT.

2:45:50 I'm currently testing an A750 for computational fluid dynamics. It's surprisingly strong in OpenCL, thanks to its fast memory. The $349 A770 16GB is the cheapest 16GB card by a longshot, and it's as fast as the $2299 Quadro RTX 5000 16GB in CFD.
There is still some minor issues though, for example it reports only 80% of its memory capacity, although 100% of memory are usable.

Brazilian here, can confirm the import tariffs it's really expensive, usually electronics here costs the double compared to US but here the minimum wage is like 5x lower and 90% of population earn less than 4x minimum wage, sooo, an iPhone here is really considered luxury and status.
An iPhone here sells for around BRL10k which is about USD2k but when your annual income is like USD4k or 5k you start to see why is out of reach for most people

I imported a Steam Deck here in Brazil and I ended up paying close to a second Deck in taxes alone. You even pay taxes on shipping fees and the bloody insurance. Some brazillian companies like Positivo have a very strong lobby to prevent any sort of tax reduction on imported eletronics.
