Massive Supercell Cloud Appears Over North Dakota

Residents of Bottineau County, ND, spotted this massive 'mothership’ supercell cloud on July 22 as a severe thunderstorm moved through the area.

Mothership supercells are called such because of their resemblance to giant flying saucers. The storms have a strong rotating upward draft and can produce hail, flash flooding, and tornadoes.

Driving from Oklahoma City through Kansas many years ago I drove underneath one of these in the early afternoon. I remember looking up as I headed under it and it was crazy. About 40 mins later, even though it was still day time, it was dark as night and so much rain there was no visibility through the windshield. I had to constantly look out the drivers side window; I could see the white line of my lane on the highway going by and that's how I stayed on the road. Drove like that for about 2 hours.

This phenomenon is called a supercell they look small at the bottom but the top it goes all the way up😅

That’s a supercell, I’d advise to get shelter unless ur a storm chaser. They are the things that spawn tornadoes as well.

The low clouds are known as “Shelf clouds” sometimes mistaken by “rolling clouds”
