Confronting the New Era of Global Conflicts: The Pearson Institute (Part 2 of 2)

The world is facing a refugee crisis not seen since World War II, underscoring the urgent need for new approaches to confronting the causes and consequences of global conflicts. The Pearson Family, through The Thomas L. Pearson and The Pearson Family Members Foundation, has given a landmark $100 million gift to the University of Chicago to establish The Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts and The Pearson Global Forum at the Harris School of Public Policy.

On September 30, 2015, University of Chicago President Robert J. Zimmer and Daniel Diermeier, Dean of the Harris School of Public Policy, announce The Pearson Institute and introduce Richard Haass, President of the Council on Foreign Relations, followed by a panel discussion with:

• Colonel (Ret.) Joseph Felter, Senior Research Scholar, Center for International Security and Cooperation, and Research Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford University
• Simon Henshaw, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, US Department of State
• James Robinson, University Professor, Harris School of Public Policy, and co-author of the award-winning book Why Nations Fail
• Julianne Smith, Senior Fellow and Director of the Strategy and Statecraft Program at the Center for a New American Security
• Ian Solomon, Vice President for Global Engagement, The University of Chicago
• Ethan Bueno de Mesquita, Professor and Deputy Dean for Research and Strategic Initiatives, Harris School of Public Policy

The Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts will advance a rapidly emerging area of scholarship in the study of violent conflicts.
