I’ve never heard “Funny Thing” by Thundercat before… now I have to write my own bass line. In front of you. In 3 takes. Let’s hit it.

Need the bass tab and sheet music for the original Funny Thing bass line? Here ya go -

Thundercat is one of the most shredding bass players alive today - what am I getting myself into?

“Funny Thing” is the most popular track from Thundercat’s 2020 album “It Is What It Is,” featuring his beastly signature 6-string bass sound.

Watch the video to see if I was able to fake it okay on 4-string, and how my bass line compared to the original. (hopefully not terrible)

Which bass line did you like better, mine or Thundercat’s? ⚡🐱

You are incredible for creating what you did in 3 tries! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 This is why you are my bass teacher! And yes, more Thundercat please!

I’m very impressed with how close your overall bass line was to his. Excellent job!

This was a very interesting video. I’d like to see more featuring other artists as well.

Saw Thundercat last summer when he opened for RHCP. He was amazing, and his finger speed is ridiculous.

As a beginner bassist I liked to see u build a bass line on the spot with comments, it is inspiring. And again a great video 👏

Dude, in 3 takes you got like 80% of the way there?! I'd be over the moon. It also took major balls to do it live in front of the camera like that. Kudos.

You should feel absolutely proud of your bassline. Being able to come up with a sound that was pretty darn close to Thundercat's in such a short time speaks to your flexibility.

It sounded great. The fact that your baseline had such similarities shows how much experience you have and how good your ear is. And also, hell yes to more thundercat videos!!

I love Thundercat's looks and personality. He was amazing in Suicidal Tendencies, he has titanium bones in his back (his bass is a boat anchor), and is music goes into the weird side of R&B which makes it easier to get into for outsiders 👏👌

I love that pro bassist Josh is playing a Squier for this vid. It's taken me such a long time to realize that price does not equal

Since the late 90's, overall instrument quality has improved so much that you can find some really amazing "beginner-to-intermediate" level instruments and still some clunker "pro" instruments. The variability in styles, human physiques, and desired tones so often bridges the gap in areas that affordable instruments are seen as deficient.

In fact, just yesterday I picked up a bass I put together from parts back in high school, and was blown away by how much something that has basically zero resale value still rocked so hard. \, , /,

TL;DR: Don't impulsively buy that shiny new piece of gear on the internet; wait until you've tried it out with your own hands/ears and compared it to something you already like/own to decide.

To be able to put that bassline together that quickly is amazing. You should be doing session work in Nashville or LA.

I wish more Youtube music "experts" put themselves out there like what you did here. Great video. Inspiring. More of this please.

You and Thundercat have a big thing in common, y'all both make me want to pick up my bass right now and get to playing. I can't hear anything by Thundercat without immediately wanting to try it, despite knowing he's well out of my league.

Y'all are both bass-ed, I love it!

Not a bassist or even learning bass (just a weirdo who loves to see artists work) and happened to find your video - super impressed! I'd love to see more of this kinda thing! ❤️

I dug it! i've never heard of Thunder cat until now, and I'm a fan from this point on lol. I was humming along as you were playing, and we thought of doing a lot of the same things lol. It was pretty cool.
