How to Set or Change the Default Media Player in Windows 11 [Tutorial]

Like its earlier versions, Windows 11/10 chooses its default players to run your music and video clips. But, what if you do not like the default media player and instead, want a different program to open your music and video files? You can set your desired program as the default Media Player in Windows 11/10. Let us see how to do it.

Issues addressed in this tutorial:

Get rid of all the default apps in Windows 11 by setting your favorite apps as defaults. Microsoft has greatly revised the user interface of Windows 11. And, completely redesigned the Settings app. In addition to the layout, Microsoft removed some settings from their settings app. Previously, you could set your favorite apps as defaults with one click. However, this whole process now becomes tedious and inconvenient for users.

This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, Alienware, Razer, MSI, Huawei , Microsoft Surface, and Samsung.

Windows 11 is an evolution but in backward. Back in Windows 10, we were still able to just select the default app by file kind(music, video and so on). Now we have to select which app to use for EACH file extension. I don't understand why they removed that from Windows 10!

I am not an old school person, but I really hate how they made the change on the Settings. The legacy CP looks aged I might add, but at least it worked totally fine. Now they made a Settings App to replace the old CP, making it much more difficult to access the options I need. They spent almost 10 years to refine this thing, and it turned out a cheap wannabe modern crap.

If I must say, Windows 10 Settings is more user-friendly than the 11's.

While the market share of Windows is much larger than MacOS, they could not even make something that is better than a 10 years-old-MacOS.

We can only hope there is something that can end the monopoly, so MS can be more aggressive to do something useful.

You make some very nice videos. They are direct, to the point without fanfare and well coordinated between the explanation and video.

Just spend you whole weekend setting 10 apps the default apps with 25 extensions, so 250 times.

In Windows Media Player I used to be able to skip from one vodeo to the next by clicking an arrow on the right of the screen. That feature isn't there anymore. I have Windows 10. Is there a way to restore that feature?

I've changed all mine to itunes but all my music still goes to media player. Where you choose you default music player all that comes up is windows media player, iTunes is not even an option, I'm so frustrated.

Microsoft products really have gone to shit. The real reason you want to do this is to install VLC. Microsoft default player makes you BUY other video codecs that work freely on VLC. That's if you can survive the tedious process of switching EACH INDIVIDUAL video type. Yet another downgrade from the previous Windows experience. I'm switching to linux next time on desktop. This is my last windows pc.
