That cleaning video is the most creative way to troll coin collectors that I have ever seen !

I do clean some of my old grimey coins that aren't worth much over their face value. I plan on keeping them forever, so it doesn't matter to me. I like seeing nice coins in my albums.

My goal in life is to find rare coins, clean them, then return them to circulation.

Rob Holsen is the coin washer at the Westin St. Francis Hotel, and perhaps the only coin washer on Earth. He said the hotel on Union Square started washing its coins in 1934 when the general manager noticed a woman's white gloves getting dirty. Now, nearly 80 years later, the tradition somehow survives.

I keep finding stuff about 'restoring' or cleaning old coins, when all i really am trying to find is how old coins are preserved with conservation for the next generation.

Easy to see the distress in your reaction. I remember going to a house where they had some common lincolns as it turns out, but they cleaned them with copper cleaner as I drove to look at them. Told them, spend em.

Well, a cheap sand blaster is about $359. An air compressor strong enough to push it, another $600. That puts a bit of a damper on any coin premiums, especially when you're already getting a 90% loss. So yeah, a tooth brush is probably more economical.

I find toothpaste works well but for stubborn stains nothing beats sandpaper! 🤣

Dude is 100% correct. Leave the patina if you want to get paid.

This guy is supposed to be an "experienced Numismatist" from South Africa (I know because I'm a South African Numismatist) and I keep telling him to stop with this but he just doesn't give up, for the internet views I guess

Just in case some people new to collecting thinks this is no big deal (on valuable coins) well all graders scope the coins when grading and it is OBVIOUS when a coin is cleaned real collectors wont even buy cleaned coins usually making them worth very little compared to uncleaned. Just dont do it please

Why does getting rid of all the dirt and debris off a coin make it reduce it's value? The better condition it is the higher the value is.

Corroded, rusted and dirty old pennies are worth a lot less if their not clean. There are certain old pennies that are worth a lot of money but if they're in disgusting condition they're not worth as much.
OR don't don't take it off your hands for 5 bucks and sell it for it's actual worth if it's a big value coin.

So please explain why making it more valuable somehow decreases the value ⁉️
