My thoughts on The Landmark edition of Xenophon’s Hellenika #booktube

HISTORATHON 2023
Historathon is a year-long celebration of reading historical nonfiction. The goal is to read, discuss, and spotlight works of history, and to encourage reluctant readers to give history a try. The calendar year will be divided into three-month blocks, with each block focusing on a particular period of time:

Jan-March = Prehistory-500 CE
April-June = 500-1500
July-Sept = 1500-1820
Oct-Dec = 1820-Present

To participate, simply read a work of history that falls into the time period for each quarterly segment of the year. Read more if you’d like! Tailor the choices to your interests or try something completely new.

Historathon "Side Quests": We will also be encouraging/participating in history-related activities throughout the year, including watching historical films/documentaries, trying historical recipes, listen to historical music, etc. Feel free to join us!

We will be using the hashtag: #historathon2023

Yeah, I read this for the first time in the Penguin edition. The Landmark edition is so much better. I really needed those maps.

They REALLY need to do this for Sima Qian.

Beforehand, I strongly disagree with the idea that Hellenica is a dry read. On the contrary, it is so informative in regard to politics, warfare, history, and biographical content. My only two regrets are not having read The Landmark edition (I had to get my own maps and historical context to follow Xenophon closer) and not having read Anabasis prior, so as to be better chronologically tuned and more aware about re-appearing characters like Tissaphernes, Cyrus the younger, Clearchus the Spartan, etc. Hellenica is an amazing read for those interested in classical antiquity. Although I would strongly urge anyone to first read Herodotus, followed by Thucydides, Anabasis, and Hellenica, all in the Landmark edition.Thank you for making this video available.

I just got my landmark anabasis and saw inside that the landmark polybius is a forthcoming addition to the series! I looked online to see that it is expected in 2026

As I'm trying to read chronologically, I'm unsure to read Hellenika or Anabasis by Xenophon after Thucydides.
Do you think Hellenika gives a better context to the Anabasis or is it the other way around?

I haven't read much of Xenophon's histories
like the Anabasis and the Helenika
more I have read his accounts of Socrates
in that he paints a very different picture of Socrates
than the better known Plato
the only other surviving records of Socrates.

Not being a fan of Plato - it was interesting to read
another follower of Socrates accounts of their hero.
