Atari Couchcade Review & Gameplay Of All Games

I review our Atari Couchcade and play through each of the games on the unit. I bought this mainly to be able to play classic Atari arcade games with the spinner and trackball. It includes the control deck and a hub with ten classic games on it. This is my thoughts on the unit and gameplay of all the games.

In Crystal Castles, go to the back left corner of Level One and jump. You will warp to a later level.

Just ordered this couchcade, looks like it works pretty well for you. Two things, first, there are difficulty levels associated with some of the games I believe. When you were playing Missile Command, the incoming missiles were falling faster than they do in the actual 80's arcade machine, so you might want to see if there is a difficulty adjustment on your couchcade for Missile Command and what it's set at.

Second, if you have an actual video arcade near your residence and they have an original Missile Command game there with the much larger trackball (4-5 inch diameter), you've GOT to try it with that big trackball. The larger the ball, the more precisely you can place the target for your missiles. The downside is, you'll probably never be satisfied using the small trackball again. 😉😉

Tempest is by far the greatest arcade game ever designed. You can play it for 2-3 minutes or for 1-2 hours. The key is understanding the game's timing for each color level. (blue, red, yellow, etc). Typical players only play the first 16 blue levels, maybe get into a few red levels. Master players can play up to invisible levels where the grids can't be seen. There are 99 levels in total. Once you hit level 99, the game grid becomes random, picking from all 99 levels; thus you don't know what level is coming next.

I love how your son plays tempest. 😊 Major Havoc is fantastic. If you get into it, you will find yourself playing for hours as you try to go farther and farther.

I played the original Asteriods when it came out in the arcade in 1979 and the game was designed to use buttons and the player has far more precision control over the ship using buttons compared to the horrible cores design that forces the player to use a stick controller or gamepad.

You're making me feel old. I was 6 when we got this for Christmas in 1979. I actually played this game more than my brothers did. My younger brother was 5 and my older brother was 10. My favorite game was frogger.

Shame it doesn't include Super Breakout.

Having played all the actual arcade versions of these games, I can tell you they are spot on including the SOUNDS. Back in the day these were excellent! Imo they still are! The games play and sound exact. The controls were like this. If they are different on switch it’s because the switch does NOT have a trackball or a spinner. But this was the way…

Man, this looks like a ton of fun! I have fond (and frustrating) memories with Milipede.

That system you bought is pretty sick. It didn't look easy to play some of the games, but I love a good challenge. I think major havoc would be a favorite of mine.

"Your great-grand daddy probably played this in the arcade." 😢
Thanks for that, I was 10 when Asteroids came out!
Now, who stole my walker and orthopedic shoes?

Looks good but only 10 games and only 3 I like. Love the speedball

Asteroids deluxe is missing the cool painted asteroid background. Atari is going some interesting things but something is amiss. The design of the ‘console’ although rich in controller types the graphic design could be so much better.

The desirability of this unit depends entirely on the quality of the controls. Have you played arcade Centipede or Missile Command, and can you compare the trackballs? How good is the spinner for Tempest? How close to the arcade? The games look pretty much arcade perfect, but I don’t know if they PLAY like they should, owing to the controls. PS A spinner works well as a driving controller. They should have included Pole Position. Good video!
