How does Lane Assist work?

Lane keeping steering systems such as Lane Assist is what we call an electronic driver aid, or sometimes an advanced driver assistance system — ADAS. The two critical words here are driver and assistance — the system isn’t there to take over the driving, it’s there to help you with your driving workload. In this video we demonstrate the technology at work, point out its strengths and weaknesses, explain its limitations and conclude that the world would be a safer place if every car had Lane Assist enabled.

Well said, I’ve got it and glad of it although, when overtaking or veering over the centre line to avoid stationary vehicles or obstacles etc you do have to fight it a bit…..Great vid 👍

I think lane assist is probably the most dangerous feature fitted to modern cars. On my wife's car it can be switched off by default, but not on my #SkodaEnyaq, I have to switch it off on every journey. Most of my driving is on unmarked country roads where lane assist can make driving both unpleasant and potentially dangerous. We should be able to switch it off by default at least.

I really can't agree with your comments regarding LA contributing to road safety. I'm a very high mileage motorist & I really enjoy driving. I can't bear having my steering wheel yanked all day long as I'm visiting forestry in remote areas in the course of my work. You do realise that LA responds to changes in the tarmac surface, like roadworks etc. Some day a pedestrian will be killed or maimed by a car swerving on a lonely country road. We must be allowed to switch it off.
