Interesting how in Mario 1, the lava itself doesn't even kill Mario. I guess it's treated like a background layer rather than an actual hazard.

If you still have Mario 64, try this. Go to Lethal Lava Land stage (the one in this video), be sure to select the 5th or 6th starman when you enter (what you need won't be there if you select 1 through 4). At the end of that first series of platforms at the beginning, right in front of where Mario's facing as it begins, there's a box with a Koopa shell in it. The shell can be used to surf on the lava. Now, take the shell and surf behind that gate where the big log is (this is the log you had to roll on to collect the 3rd or 4th star in the stage). Be careful because there are "lava jets" shooting upward as you're surfing and if you get hit you'll be knocked off the shell. When you make it there, surf directly into the log, just crash right into it! My lengthy descriptions make this sound more complicated than it is, but it's funny and worth doing!

Real Lava: Thick enough to stand on, impossible to sink it. Kills instantly.

Super Mario Lava: Glowing Tomato Sauce, sinks into it for a few games, in some games it only takes away a couple health points at a time.
