I remember my first trip to the Aberlour Haggis Sanctuary. Even as a 5 year old that visit will stay with me for the rest of my life. we'd learned about the Haggis in nursery, but the chance to actually see one was something else!

The principal reason for haggis being so very hard to find is the behavioral ability it has evolved to almost always be behind any observer - self evidently this makes seeing them extremely difficult. The only way to overcome this is to have two observers back-to-back, but to do so and cross the landscape unnoticed by haggis is a virtual impossibility, so the quest continues...

I love me some rare wildlife. Hats off to the camera team for the determination to get such stunning footage of these shy and elusive animals.

The buggers make a right mess of my lawn at night. However i find that spreading mint sauce over the lawn does help to deter them

I did live in the Highlands for 14 years in a remote area. The Haggis was rarely seen, mainly at dusk, never caused any problems and I would never eat such a sweet, gentle and innocent creature.

Such curious and delightful creatures. Especially the little ones. So playful when they don't realise they are being observed ❤

I visited the Haggis website. So many video's. What dedication some could almost say obsession to the humor of the Haggis. Now if someone here in the States where so dedicated to the Snipe and how it was almost hunted to extinction.

Hello from New Zealand. I invite anyone to listen to Kenneth McKellar's rendition of the traditional ballard 'Haggis Amongst the Thistles!' Stirs the Scottish through my blood just listening to it! 🙂

Loving the algorithm at the minute! I remember back in day while hunting the wildman with my noble friends, that one of these critters after being startled by our presence, promptly bit ones ankle and proceeded on its merry way ! A most bizarre encounter indeed 😁

My Scottish grandfather was just a small boy when he came to America, but told me he thought we were related to a Duke. Years later, to my pleasant surprise, I discovered it wasn't a duke but his forester, who hunted the wild haggis up in the highlands on weekends. We've an old family photo of our Hamish holding a young pup brought back and kept as a beloved pet. The photo's around here somewhere...

The best way to watch them is to make a disguise. A rough circle of canvas on which you have grown grass and heather seeds to look natural enough, and mask your scent. When you discover where they are you lay on the ground with the disguise over you. It's possible to crawl slowly and quietly to get quite close to them. Make sure your camera doesn't make a sound, obviously. The smaller ones in particular startle quite easily when they are ferile and have never been hand fed or gently handled over time.

A sincere thank you to everyone at Haggis Wildlife Foundation for your kindness during our visit. We found the Wild Haggis utterly fascinating; you can be proud of what has been achieved in managing their population successfully despite many challenges. As discussed, we would be happy to welcome your representatives at our Yowie Research and Rescue facility in Glendale. Best of luck!
