I grew up in Kelsall, there were always stories of Witchcraft and Devil worshippers Using Delamere forest for their rituals..it was a very creepy place at night, it had a very ominous vibe..and we saw lights moving about deep in the forest late at night.

The term from witch is derived was mainly applied to men, "wicca", in Old English, note the masculine ending, whereas the feminine was wicce. despite the masculine form being the most common in OE (c.450-c.1100CE), but it's the minority feminine form that became preserved as witche in early modern English.
