I review, breakdown and explain The Idol Episode 1. I discuss the controversy behind the show which stars The Weeknd and Lily Rose Depp and react to everything that is wrong with it. I react to Sam Levison re-writing the show, the behind the scenes drama, the public response to the first episode and what can be expected for the rest of the season. They completely re-shot the show with the male gaze, but they aren’t willing to admit that

I get that they wanna show how fucked up Hollywood is, but putting an actress through EXTREMELY GRAPHIC depictions of traumatic events is not the way to go. Sam Levinson never chooses subtlety or nuance; while he sometimes has artistic decisions that come through nicely, 99% of the time its gratuitous panty/body shots and unnecessary r**e and sex scenes.

I feel like the controversy will get worse. I heard so many weird things about the show that might be true. Jocelyn’s assistant says Tedros gives “rapey vibes” and Jocelyn says “I like that about him”. That really caught me off guard and it makes me hesitant to continue watching the show.

Imagine if someone wrote a show about slavery, with the intention to criticize and expose the horrors behind it... and then completely changed the message to "hey, slavery was actually empowering and cool". That's exactly what The Idol is doing.

They're glorifying the thing they were originally going to criticize, thus becoming part of the problem. Pathetic. Screw Sam, Abel and everyone else involved.

The Music industry is messed up but Sam Levinson just wanted to show his fetishes. A female director was fired despite 80% of the show being finished and to turn it into a torture porn show is disgusting.

Yes I heard they basically re-did the entire season. I bet the original was much better

I wish they would’ve kept the cult aspect in there it would’ve been so interesting

So let me get this straight. The world loved seeing teenagers deal with similar issues in Euphoria but hate seeing adults deal with trauma and lust in Hollywood with The Idol. Okay……….

I think when we saw 'From the creator of Euphoria ' we knew what kind of show it would be.

Oh man, you gotta love how they want to show the exploitation of a young woman by… exploiting a young woman. The way Lily-Rose Depp is made to dress CAN work narratively, but I feel like it’s all there for the cheap male-gazey-ness of it. The show was okay - if slightly fucked up - when focusing on Jocelyn but The Weeknd/Tedros shows up and gave me all the icks. I literally only checked it out for Jennie and you know the marketing team know that with how much they’re pushing her in the promos. Fuck, she barely has lines in it! 😭
Personally, hearing that they decided to reshoot it because it was veering into ‘the feminine perspective’ is just peak out of touch main character energy. Like god forbid a show called “The Idol” be about the actual female idol aka the lead. Nope, we should learn more about The Weeknd’s crusty, rapey-ass character. 🙄 It could’ve been such an interesting show, but trust the big men to come in a ruin it.

I’m a 20 year old dude and film student.Seeing everyone idolize Sam Levinson for euphoria like it was on some kind of breaking bad level, infuriated me. I’m glad people are noticing this guy is weird asl

0:41 WRONG!! Sam Levinson was never a part of The Idol until after Amy left. ALSO FUN FACT! Amy Seimetz is known for playing as Millie Bobby Brown's aunt in Stranger Things.

Personally I think the show is unwatchable because the weeknd is horrible casting and just gives me a huge ick and is completely unbelievable in that role

One episode was enough for me. I dislike every single character in it. Just gross and a waste of time.

The dialogue was really weird though. It was very underwhelming like everyone was answering a text message.

What really bothers me is that they have such a huge budget plus such a talented cast…. Lily Rose, Troye Sivan, Eli Roth, the girl from BodiesBodiesBodies…. And literally nothing happens…. It seems so damn substanceless…

I think they’re happy it’s so controversial, it’d be nowhere near as big as it is otherwise

The things that they portray in the show are things that actually do happen in Hollywood and the industry, that's true. But they sexualize the characters so much to the point where it becomes uncomfortable and loses its value. Most of the time, during the first episode, they are talking about sex, saying/doing things with sexual connotations, walking around almost naked, or just straight-up having sex. And this is nothing new with Sam Levinsons' work, which is why everyone is so upset over it. His portrayals of nudity in the media are useless. They don't add anything to the story, and it doesn't actually play into portraying who a character is. It's fine if Lily's character is confident in her body and her sexuality, but Sam, using every chance he gets to just shoot scenes of her nips and genitalia just makes it come off as his own rap*y, t0rture p*rn fantasies with no real meaning.

I think the story at its core has a lot of potential but idk how the execution of it all is gonna be lol
