The one thing I don't like about setting climate goals by 2050 in the US is that we have a new president every 4-to-8 years, and whoever follows can undo decades worth of work and effort.

The reality that no one wants to tell us is that it's already too late to slow or halt catastrophic climate change. Serious steps would have been needed decades ago. A 2 degree Celcius change has been known for a long time to be a near-catastrophic amount of change, now it's a 'best case scenario' with extreme actions that are unlikely to be done.
