A Perfect Summer Day in Leiden, The Netherlands

Leiden is easily one of the best day trips you can take from Amsterdam in The Netherlands! Just a 30 minute drive away, you can visit this amazing city filled with history, museums, gorgeous canals and of course great food. If you plan to visit on a Saturday, as we did, you can visit their awesome Saturday Market which takes place just on Saturdays and Wednesdays, and runs along the canal banks.

We spent a warm summer day in Leiden discovering what there was to see. We certainly couldn't do everything in just one day, so a return trip will have to happen. We explored an amazing museum (Rijksmuseum Boerhaave) and had an awesome lunch at the oldest Pancake House in the city ('t Pannenkoekenhuysje Oudt Leyden).

✼ ABOUT US ✼
We are Nate and Katrina, two Americans living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and traveling as much as we can to see what there is to see! Call us expats, immigrants, whatever... just call us already.

We balance work life with travel... as best we can! We would love to visit every country in Europe while we live here, and definitely keep a list of our global “must visit” destinations.

We try to give you a true view of us and how we travel and explore the world. Lots of food, definitely some jokes, and probably some swearing…. Hope you enjoy taking these trips with us!

I was born in Leiden and still live there, my family came to Leiden in the 15th century and never left.
I did law school at Leiden university.
The keys are the sign of Saint Peter, the patron saint of the town. The gate you saw is the Morspoort. Mors means marches. The mill you saw is called The Put and it grinds flower for a local baker, where my wife and I get our fresh bread.
Yes it is a replica and it stands on the spot where Rembrandt’s father was a miller 😊. I could go on, but Leiden is great.

Leiden is my #2 city in the Netherlands. Utrecht being #1 my old home city.

The keys in the coat of arms of Leiden are explained simply: Saint Peter, the keeper of the gate to Heaven is the patron saint of Leiden. The keys are one of his attributes. So you see them everywhere.

You missed the pilgrim museum in the oldest building in the city. Pretty big thing for Americans. Why is there? Because the Mayflower set sail from Leiden. There’s also a Mayflower monument in the side of the Pieterskerk.

Please people, keep Leyden a big secret, we don't want to end like mad Amsterdam. Being overrun by tourists.

The Pilgrims, first settlers in America, used to live in Leiden for a while, after leaving Britain, before they went to the USA.

where i call home these days! what i love about leiden is that it is small and quaint, but still lively. the centre (within the boundaries of the outer canals) feels a bit like an oversized, elitist village 😅 but it makes for a great atmosphere and good quality of life - if you can overlook university student shenanigans of course

Ah! You finally found the opportunity to visit my hometown! There’s a lot more to see and experience in Leiden, so: return if and when you can and—just a kind suggestion—put the botanical garden (Hortus Botanicus) at the top of your ‘in case of outdoor weather’ list 😊

Leiden had been sieged by the Spanish army for a year causing a famine in the city, but the people of Leiden held out until a certain Willem van Oranje had the levees "stabbed" so the area around was inundated and the city could be liberated by a fleet of flatbottoms. This was an important turning point in the 80-years war for indepence allthough there were 72 years more to go.

It got it's university, the first in the Netherlands, as a reward for holding out, and it became a very important one soon as the Dutch Republic became a frontrunner in the early scientific revolution.
