How Does Big Ben Keep Accurate Time?

When parliament commissioned this clock in 1854, they insisted Big Ben be the biggest, most powerful clock in the world. It takes an hour and a half to wind this massive engineering marvel!

That's amazing considering when it was built, Greenwich mean time was announced by newspaper. "The time is now...Tuesday."

Big Ben now quiet while the tower is being restored and it won't resume for four years except Remembrance Sunday and at Christmas. The tower is now being covered with scaffold all over. I think it will be three years now before it will be finished.

I have climbed up to see Big Ben strike twice. Both times were amazing.

There are actual words to the chimes. 4 at quarter past. 8 at half past. 12 at quarter to and 16 on the hour
