A detailed analysis of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, the only armed revolt against Soviet Communism, and one nearly successful, as well as both wholly-spontaneous and unplanned. And, no surprise, of what lessons can be found in it for us in 2024 America.

"In these latter days, we are told man should be made new, and if that fails, we can replace him with thinking machines. The past is therefore denigrated, largely a blank. Today, most history is obscure, except where memory is kept alive by frequent reference to some event, usually for purposes of propaganda. Thus, we hear endlessly about World War II, or rather a faerie version of it. But we never hear about many other important episodes in the years before or since. Today I will correct historical amnesia about one such event—the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, the only wholly-spontaneous armed uprising against Communism in the twentieth century. And, not coincidentally, one which offers valuable lessons to 2024 America. . . ."

In the book "1945: Year Zero" Budapest-born John Lukacs makes some fascinating observations about life in his native city and the foreign soldiers who arrived there, the year your grandfather left. Lukacs concluded in December 1945 that the situation was hopeless and left for the US in mid-1946, just in time.

Our friendship with the Poles is not based on not sharing a border with them and being Catholic. In fact, we have been bordering eachother for longer during our history than we didn't. The friendship comes from us both being a nation with rich steppe and cavalry traditions (check out Polish Sarmatism and Hungarian connections to the Scythians) and extensive ties within our nobility, many royal marriages and a history of allying eachother against outside threats since the early medieval ages.

Louis II you mentioned at the start of your video was a Polish king of Hungary for example.

Let’s not forget who the rebellion was actually against.

Maybe experiencing communism was needed to turn eastern Europe conservative/traditionalist.

Horthy's forces deported Polish and Soviet Jews in the Kamianets Podilskyi massacre in 1941 as Hungarian troops occupied western Ukraine. Einsatzgruppen executed 23, 000 including 16, 000 deported from Hungary.
