SUPER-underpromotion!

In this incredibly unique example chess position there is reason to underpromote your pawn, to, well... a pawn. Here's why:

In this mind blowing position, black is threatening an unstoppable mate in 2 with Knight d3 followed by Knight f2 checkmate.

White has no way out, as even if they promote to a queen they cannot stop the mate in 2, but they could once upon a time…

Do you see how?

The move is the phenomenal pawn to a8 with the pawn becoming… a pawn.

In this case, because there are no available moves for white, it is stalemate… and the game is a draw,
And if black wants to try to give white a space for his king to move to, there simply isn't a way to do that in one move, as every square the white king could escape to is guarded twice, requiring two moves to un-protect.

I hate how people think they can just change the rules they don’t like. The game has been around far longer than any of the people that are changing the rules. It just makes chess less interesting and fun.

I think this rule change was good because ultimately your pawn creates a dead square.

Just make the pawn a knight, it still can’t move.

Side note: I’ve never played a chess video game where you have the option to promote a pawn to a pawn. This may be because I play on cool math games.

Edit: I may be an idiot, the knight would be able to take a piece, I didn’t think about that.

Thats such a cool rule. You also forgot the move where you promote the pawn into a king and the king builds an army to defeat the black army.
