To be fair, Miami retired the #23 in respect to Michael Jordan. So that started the whole 6/23 debacle.

Never undestood the concept of removing a number to honor a player. A great number that stays in circulation has a way of bridging stars from different eras. It becomes a coveted status symbols as well as great burden.
In soccer, English star Mason Mount ws given #7 made famous by club legends Cristiano, Bryan Robson, David Beckham, George Best, Mixhael Owen, Eric Cantona.
And less succesful Memphis Depay, Antonio Valencia, Keith Gillespie.
But this way makes the number iconic and stars of the past are always present.
As a pro, wearing the shirt # of a player you idolized is a very powerful thing.
So im not a fan erasing the history of a number, of ending the lineage.
