Putin Suspends Nuclear-Arms Treaty Between Russia, U.S.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the suspension of Russia's participation in the last remaining major nuclear-arms-control treaty between the U.S. and Russia, the New Start treaty. He blamed the West for the conflict in Ukraine and accused them of trying to deal Russia a strategic defeat by meddling with its nuclear facilities. The U.S. had accused Russia of violating the New Start treaty by refusing on-site inspections and discussing compliance concerns. The Biden administration had hoped to preserve the treaty and had urged Russia to correct the violations.
