Depth Perception (Intro Psych Tutorial #57)

In this video I describe the many cues that we use to perceive depth and experience a 3D world based on the 2D information from our retinas. These include monocular cues (linear perspective, relative size, texture gradient, interposition, and shading), motion-based cues (motion parallax and optic flow) and binocular cues (disparity and convergence).

Would you agree that all images and videos are 2-D unless manipulated? A good parallax demonstration with a camera. While driving down the highway. Zoom a camera forward. As you zoom ahead. Everything in the distance will slow down in the camera. I also find that when encountering heavy rain on the highway. If you hold your cell camera in front of you. You can see much better. A good use for the cell phone camera and why we should have self-driving autos.

Don't have a psych exam that I know about anytime soon as I have been out of college 28 years but happened upon your video looking for a description of Motion Parallax and I must say I found it quite interesting and watched the whole thing. As an instructor you did an excellent job of explaining the concepts. Thank you for creating this helpful content.
