Kärnan is a medieval tower in Helsingborg, Scania, in southern Sweden. It is the only part remaining of a larger Danish fortress which, along with the fortress Kronborg on the opposite bank of the Øresund, controlled the entranceway between the Kattegat and the Øresund and further south the Baltic Sea.
The core, one of Helsingborg's well-known symbols, is a nearly 700-year-old watchtower. The tower is the only thing left of the medieval castle complex that was called Helsingborg Castle. The core is 35 meters high and consists of 4 floors and a terrace. In the tower there is an exhibition that tells more about Kärnan and medieval history. Among other things, you can try an ostrich cap and a serk! Open March-November.
Kärnan is a destination for the whole family. To get up the tower there is a long and adventurous rather narrow spiral staircase, but the fantastic view makes it worth the effort.
