If that was a $500 coat i’d for sure agree to snatch one up. But we all know that no item of clothing is worth $5000 to the average person. And that is a luxury price tag from a luxury brand. $5000 is a used Honda.

5K is still INSANE. It might make sense for those in the 1%.

I thrifted one a few years back for 15 euros. The quality is amazing. And yes, the fabric of the pockets is so comfy, I noticed right away. But overall it’s just amazing. My best find ever.

MaxMara coats are the best investment prices. I’ve had mine for 15 years, they still wear the same and are timeless. I wrote a comment on the previous review. This navy coat is the Icon 101 801. It’s not available every year. In 2006 it was $2000. Today it retails for $4, 500. The 90/10 aka Beaver Cashmere, has less drape and more structure than their 100% Cashmere coats. It’s like a Chesterfield double breasted men’s coat. But it has dolman sleeves, and a lower Lapel. fatal Attraction, Baby Boom and Home Alone. Glenn Close Diane Keaton and Catherine O’Hara. 90/10 is very common for higher end ITALIan RTW. 10% wool adds structure and durability.

Just want to say that I bought two beautiful Max Mara coats preloved on Vestiaire. One is a camel and the other a dark brown and both have a belt. I bought the camel for €500 and the dark brown one for €280. Both are a steal, so do not be discouraged that it is hard to find good quality coats and try preloved instead. It may take some time to find the perfect preloved coat with the exact shape, size, color, and details you want, but eventually your patience will pay off and you find a coat that will be in your closet for years :)

I'm glad you said it was a lot near the end because that is RIDICULOUS to me. I thought I was losin it. It does seem like a good investment, though

I buy my maxmara pieces on vinted (like a west-european thread-up). Never costs me much. It's the best! I was so scared you were gonna tear her to schreds but she triumphed!

What people don't realize is that high quality clothes have always costs a ton of money. A hundred years ago people would spend on average 30% on their salary on clothes and they didn't have a lot of pieces! I saw a video of a woman who showed a dress that her grandmother bought for 100 dollars, I think it was in the 20s. In today's money that's around 2300 dollars! For one dress. The idea of affordable clothing existing at all is very new

Bound button holes are not difficult to do. They just take longer to make. Still a nice finishing touch since you rarely find them on clothes anymore. But I'd still argue that the mark up on that coat is insane. It better be 100 percent cashmere wool for that price. Edit: I didn't watch all the way through. At least they gave you nice wool. But with that kind of price I'm glad I have the time to sew my own wool coat. That wool is probably $50-60 a yard, probably takes 3-5 yards to make it. $5-20 per yard for lining, depending if it's polyester or bemberg. Maybe 2-3 yards needed for lining. Thread and buttons aren't that expensive. Maybe 30 bucks total. The rest is labour. As an amateur sewist, maybe 30-40 hours of work. Or 1-2 months of work if you spend most of your free time making it. It's not even a princess seam coat so the style itself isn't even that insanely difficult.

If you travel to Italy, it costs 1000 or less on sale. The difference of price is crazy

Buy Marella or Marina Rinaldi coats instead. These are sister brands of Max Mara, same cut, better price, and natural fabric as well most of the time. They are less likely to be fake than MM if you buy secondhand because they are lesser known.

For 5K, you could buy sewing lessons, an amazing computerized sewing machine, fabric, buttons, notions, heck even furnish a sewing room with that money D:

I think the market is intentionally flooded with poor quality just to make regular old quality seem like luxury when it’s not.

George Simenton coats are that beautiful and straight. It’s his higher end line, I got mine from Saks almost a decade ago, I wear it alll the time and it is still super beautiful

I thrifted a wool MaxMara coat a few years ago. It still looks the same after 5-6 winters.
That being said, I wouldn't be able to afford 500 usd for a coat 😅
