I am in Chicago, IL. I honestly have never seen the stars. I keep hearing they exist. I've seen pictures/video. But I've never seen them for myself. Not a sky full. The most I've ever counted on a clear night has been 8-10. That's it. It makes me want to weep. I don't drive or own a car, so I can't get to someplace where I could see them.

The only exception: Years ago I drove with a friend to a far suburb to drop off another friend at college. At some point, when we had all said goodbye and were going back to the car, I glanced up and saw the sky. It was barely a moment. My friend was in a hurry to get home. It was late and it was a long way home. She was the one driving, so I didn't have much choice.

The night sky without light pollution is just mind blowing. Just think for a second; every human on earth saw that until ~200 years ago.
