"Does an expensive mechanical keyboard type better?"
(jazz music stops)
"No, not really"

We think so much about what we need, that we sometimes forget it's ok to try something new. I'm typing this on a 40 percent with lubed roselios switches, xda keycaps and a custom wood case my dad helped me make. I wouldn't have discovered this passion without you Taeha, thank you.

In other fields, the tools people use are considered important enough that when people can, they make sure to get the best version of it. If you were a carpenter for a living or even just a hobbyist, you'd make sure to have good quality tools when possible. Those tools usually last longer than cheaper ones, maybe have some extra functions that cheap ones don't have, or they just have better quality of life things for the user that make them more enjoyable to use.

Somehow a great majority of people have failed to apply the same thought process to their keyboards they use day in day out. There are plenty of people out there who type all day and still just use their laptop keyboard or a cheap rubber dome. Some people would drops 1000s on a custom gaming PC and even getting into the details of having the right coloured cables for their case etc, then when it comes to the keyboard they would settle for whatever is the cheapest RGB mech on Amazon and call it a day.

As Nathan said you can still input data with those cheaper keyboard options, but they are not in the same realm when it comes to enjoyment to use. Also I'd argue that these keyboards CAN make you a better typist. I got myself a split layout keyboard and it actually improved my typing abilities as it helped me train out some bad habits I had when typing, which made me a faster typer. Additionally because a keyboard is nicer to use and feels more comfortable (especially now I can have a heavier weight switch to match my heavy typing style) I feel better typing at greater speeds for longer as my fingers become less fatigued so it has in a way helped with productivity. Also with a nice solid alu case with foam inside and lubed switches, the keyboard sounds nice to type on and is now a lot less offensive to the people around me too. Before I would type on a big echoy plastic keyboard that with every keypress it would echo through the house.

This hobby also opened me up to other hobbies too as I learned to solder so I can build a custom mech, now I use those soldering skills in other parts of my life and other hobbies too. In fact thanks to that skill I even fixed a control unit for an expensive kitchen appliance at home that would have cost a lot to replace or have someone come out to fix but I was able to fix it with my ability to solder.

My interest in mech keyboards is just starting to blossom, but this was a great "why" video. Also can fully relate when you gave the camera analogy.

What Taeha is saying is so true. I got a mechanical keyboard for the first time at the beginning of summer. For the first time ever I actually had the motivation I needed to learn how to touch type. I had tried before many times but always quit. Today, I have been learning to touch type for almost 3 months. I used to type 50-60 wpm. I went down to 28 wpm. But today I can type up to 116 wpm averaging 96 wpm on 10fastfingers and was recently able to average 91 on typeracer (had luck with the passages also). Hope to improve even more as the months turn into years! I never thought I would enjoy typing so much!

I like the analogy of cars: even though high end cars do nothing more than a lower end cars, people like them because of the feel and satisfacion makes them want to enjoy the ride and do more than just going from A to B

I've been using a Corsair K70 MK2 SE for about two years now. I love it so much. A keyboard is a peripheral that you interact with the digital world. It is a very important piece of hardware in our present times.

The truth: these 3 months since I got into mechanical keyboard, I purchased 8 keyboards, sold 2, returned 2, broke 1, and kept 3 for now. The time I was used to study and do constructive things now become times I research on keyboards, watch people building them, got torn between endless choices on which switch/keycap/cable to buy, and f**king typing practice websites. I just hope my obsession can end soon and get back to normal. In fact I even type faster on membrane keyboard.
